Pop poseur alert

Today film critic Ty Burr breathlessly assures us that:

As written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons, "Watchmen" the comic book has the ideas, the characters, the layered details, and the thematic heft of an epic novel.

Hmmm.

I wonder which "epic novel" Watchmen bears comparison to? War and Peace? Moby Dick? Ulysses? Remembrance of Things Past? Gravity's Rainbow? Captain Ahab, meet Dr. Manhattan (at left)! Tyrone Slothrop, Rorschach! Albertine, Silk Spectre!

Or is Ty referring to such epic novels as, say, The Thorn Birds? And what's all this about "the thrill of rediscovering your inner superhero . . . "? Does somebody have a cape and tights hanging in their closet?

For a far funnier takedown of the pic, check out Anthony Lane's delirious pan in the New Yorker.
